How To Join a Patrol
Do you have what it takes?
Here is a basic list of what you can expect for your first year, but you must contact the ski mountain the season before you join. Now is the time to talk to a patroller about joining for next season!
Must be 15 years or older
Must be able to ski/ride all terrain.
Be able to lift 50 pounds and work with guests on the ground.
Supply your own equipment including ski/snowboard, black pants, helmet, goggles, and other warm clothing.
Be willing to work in harsh weather such as below 0*, wind, rain, & snow.
Conduct yourself in a professional manner and interact positively with guests.
Have a coachable mindset to work collaboratively with other patrollers, supervisors, and staff.
Complete and maintain the Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Course certification which is a hybrid of in-person first aid skills (about 100 hrs) and self paced online/book learning. At the end you must pass a written assessment and a first aid practical exam. This course is usually offered in the fall. (Se Below)
Complete the Outdoor Emergency Transport (OET) course which is a combination of unloaded and loaded toboggan transporting. There will be a formal evaluation at the end of the season.
Outdoor Emergency Course
Prepares you to meet a number of requirements needed to certify an individual as an Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Technician. In an OEC course, you will learn about many aspects of outdoor care, including the below key responsibilities.
Extraction & Stabilization of injured persons in the outdoor environment.
Scene Safety – identifying hazards to both responders & visitors
Safe use of outdoor emergency care skills to prevent further injury to visitors.
Moving the patient successfully to the next level of care.
Already Trained in First Aid?
You can challenge the OEC course. For existing medical professionals, such as EMTs & Paramedics, Nurses & Nurse Practitioners, Wilderness First Aid Responder, Physician Assistants and Physicians, OEC Challenge Exams accelerate the certification process. Medical professionals are required to attend review training sessions to qualify for the exams. For information contact our Challenge Director.
