The TES includes instruction and guided practice in toboggan handling procedures and related skills. The TESs offered by the Eastern NY Region have two tracks (subject to the number of participants):

  • Non-Senior candidate track - Focuses on toboggan handling and patroller skills. Terrain and specific topics covered are determined by the group interests and skill levels.

  • Senior candidate track - Provides Senior OET candidates with guidance to improve their Senior-level skills and feedback on where participants stand against the Senior standard. Terrain will be primarily Senior-level terrain. Specific topics covered will be determined by the group, with the focus on the toboggan handling, patroller skills, and skiing/riding skills required for the Senior OET evaluation. Assumes participants already have the Baseline Senior OET Event Skills (see below)

Toboggan Enhancement Seminar

The Senior tracks at events (located below) will assume that participants can perform the following skills:

  • Skiing/Riding

    1. Able to ski/ride groomed black terrain at a consistent speed making a variety of turn sizes

    2. Able to ski blue moguls at a consistent speed

  • Skills

    1. Snowplow on groomed blue terrain at consistent speed

    2. Sideslip and transitions on groomed black terrain at consistent speed

    3. Snowplow and sideslip on moguled blue terrain

  • Toboggans

    1. Know parts of sled

    2. Can run loaded sled (front and tail) on groomed black terrain

    3. Know how to use the chain brake

    4. Able to primarily ski empty sled down groomed black terrain (with occasional use of skills)

Baseline Senior OET Event Skill Assumptions

Designed for Senior OET candidates and advanced patrollers, this clinic puts your skiing, riding, and toboggan skills to the test on moguls and Senior-level terrain. Through guided discovery, hands-on practice, and focused feedback, participants can refine their skills and see how they measure up against the Senior standard.

  • Mogul Skills – Build confidence and control in challenging terrain.

  • Toboggan Handling – Practice advanced handling techniques in moguls.

  • Guided Practice – Learn through hands-on coaching and focused feedback.

  • Senior Preparation – Identify strengths and areas for improvement before the Senior evaluation.

Moguls-Only Enhancement Seminar (TES)

Designed for Senior OET candidates and advanced patrollers, this course focuses on the skiing and riding skills required for Senior-level performance. Spend a full day working through moguls and challenging terrain with detailed coaching, guided practice, and feedback to help you refine your technique and prepare for the Senior standard.

  • Senior Skiing & Riding – Develop the technique and control required at the Senior level.

  • Mogul Skills – Build confidence and precision in challenging terrain.

  • Coaching & Practice – Receive focused instruction and hands-on practice.

  • Senior Feedback – Understand where your skills stand and where to focus your training.

OET Skills - Senior Skiing/Riding

Senior OET is the higher level of NSP ski and toboggan training, designed for patrollers ready to push their skills, knowledge, and performance to the next level. Through regional clinics, home-mountain training, candidates build toward the Senior OET Evaluation in a supportive, challenging environment.

  • Train with Purpose – Work with OET Instructors and Trainer-Evaluators to develop Senior-level skills.

  • Regional Clinics – Participate in TES and Senior-focused events throughout the season.

  • Focused Feedback – Learn how your skiing, riding, and toboggan skills compare to the Senior standard.

  • Senior Preparation – Build the confidence and consistency needed for the Senior Evaluation.

  • Senior OET Evaluation – Put your skills to the test in the Eastern NY Region’s one-day Challenge Evaluation.

Senior Outdoor Emergency Transport

The Toboggan Instructor Workshop (TTW) helps develop, certify, and recertify Toboggan Instructors through focused on-snow training, teaching practice, and feedback. Choose the track that fits your goals and work alongside experienced instructors to strengthen both your OET skills and ability to teach others.

  • TI Candidate Track – Build the skills and teaching techniques needed to become a Toboggan Instructor.

  • Instructor Recertification – Refresh core skills, learn program updates, and sharpen your teaching.

  • Practice & Feedback – Deliver lessons, receive coaching, and refine your instructional skills.

  • OET Development – Strengthen personal skiing, riding, and toboggan skills.

  • Instructor Collaboration – Share experiences and work through real-world teaching situations.
